What is a Root Canal?

As part of our general dentistry procedures we carry out quality and pain-free root canal treatment in Manchester. Root canal treatment is also known as endodontics; it is necessary when the nerve supply (known as the pulp) to the tooth becomes infected. This can happen because of injury or due to decay. If the pulp gets infected the root canal system can also become infected thus resulting in an abscess. If the tooth is left untreated, it will need to be extracted.

A Pain-free Treatment

At Manor Dentist we are proud to provide a root canal treatment in Manchester and Cheshire that is pain free. Your dentist will use a local anaesthetic to ensure that you remain as comfortable as possible; it will feel just like a normal filling. This specialist treatment has been created to remove all of the infection within the root canal. The infected area is cleaned and filled to prevent further damage. This treatment will usually require a minimum of two visits to your dentist.

The First & Second Appointment

As part of our root canal treatment in Cheshire, your first appointment will include the removal of the infected pulp. If an abscess has developed, this will then be drained. Your dentist will then prepare your filling by cleaning and shaping the root canal. A temporary filling will be put in place to allow your tooth to settle. During your second appointment we will check the tooth to ensure that all the infection has been cleared, and then a permanent filling will be put in place.

How will the treated tooth appear after the procedure?

Here at Manor Dentists we provide a state of the art root canal treatment in Manchester, and thanks to our skilled team of dentists your treated tooth will usually have a natural appearance. In some cases discolouration can occur but this is easily solved through cosmetic dentistry. This procedure is highly successful but if an infection does occur the procedure can be repeated.

What if the tooth is left untreated?

If the infected tooth is not treated, your tooth will need to be removed as once the pulp has been destroyed it will not be able to heal. Some patients choose to have an extraction rather than a root canal, however we would advise that you keep your natural teeth.

Will the tooth be safe post-treatment?

Your tooth will work just as a natural tooth would. However a crown will usually be used to fully restore the tooth to its former strength. To keep your teeth in top condition you should ensure that you clean your teeth with fluoride toothpaste daily, reduce your sugar intake and you must have a regular check-up with your dentist.
